In order to play Texas Hold’em, the most popular card game on the market, a person needs to know how to deal Texas Hold’em. And, to make this poker game more fun, it is essential to deal it the way the professional dealers do.

Here’s how:

Take the cards and spread them out on the table face down, then use both of your hands to mix the cards around on the table. They should be fairly well spread out and mixed around when you are done.

After you have spread the cards around, bring them together into one stack. This is when you begin shuffling. First, cut the deck very low to the table and discreetly so that no cards can be seen by any player. Then, shuffle the cards face down. After they’ve been shuffled, take some cards from the middle of the deck and place them on the top. Then shuffle the cards again. This step should be repeated a few times. When this process is complete, the deck is cut one final time.

Dealers have a special tool to place on the bottom of the deck at this time to prevent players from seeing the bottom card.

At this stage, it is time to “burn” a card. This means you take the top card off of the deck and then place it aside. This card is never used. Now it is time to deal. Right now, the card table should have the small and large blinds placed on it, as well as the dealer button to indicate the dealing schedule. The small blind is made by the person to the left of the dealer button and the large blind is made by the person to the left of the small blind. This forced bet is determined prior to the game and usually increases as time goes on.

To deal, start with the person on the left of the dealer button. Deal each person one card and then make a second round and deal each person their second card. Do not deal each person their first and second card consecutively. These cards should be placed face down. Once the players have looked at their cards, the first betting round begins. It starts with the person to the left of the big blind and continues around the table until all bets are even. If a player chooses fold, they do so by telling the dealer or making a gesture, such as pushing their cards away. The dealer then places these cards next to him face down.

If any card is exposed, the dealer announces it to the table so that everyone is aware.

When the betting and folding is done, take the three top cards off of the deck and then drop them face down onto the felt. With one hand, spread them out so that they are fully visible. This is called, “the flop.” A second round of betting begins, starting with the person to the left of the dealer button. Any folded cards are taken by the dealer and placed to the side face down. Next, burn another card, and then place the next card beside the flop on the felt. This is called “the turn”.

Another round of betting ensues and the dealer collects any folded hands. Finally, burn another card and then place the fifth and final card face up on the felt. This is called, “the river.” At this time, there is another round of betting and/or folding. At this time any remaining players have a showdown to see who has the best hand.
