Thanks to the presence of smartphones in so many of our lives today, it is becoming difficult to define what makes a typical gamer. Of course, it may have never been completely fair to say there was a 'typical' gamer, but there were certainly many sections of society who did not play video games. Now with the smartphone, the people who do not game are in the minority.

According to stats from entities such as the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) in the United States and the Internet Advertising Bureau in the UK, anyone who games on their mobile can be categorised as a gamer. They may never have touched a games console per se, but they are still playing video games at the end of the day.

The choice of games that you can play on a mobile phone is huge. Whether you choose social media games such as Candy Crush or Threes, or you prefer to play gambling games such as bingo, roulette, poker or blackjack, you can find games to suit any interest on a mobile.

Real money games are a relatively recent addition to the mobile gaming platform. Up until a few years ago, if you wanted to play bingo or casino games online you could only do so at a laptop or desktop computer. And when smartphone gaming apps began to really get popular there seemed to be quite a long period where casino, bingo and other gaming sites hadn’t made the switch to mobile.

Now, though, it is a different story. Go onto any cash gaming site such as 32red bingo, Vic's Bingo and Cheeky Bingo and you will find that many of their games are available to play on a mobile. If you play online bingo at or any of the other major sites, you can use the same login to play on the mobile or on a desktop, so it is ideal for when you want to play sitting on the sofa, on the bus or out and about somewhere.

The UK's Internet Advertising Bureau quizzed 4,000 people about their online and gaming habits. Its 2014 report included a list of the most popular gaming types. At the top, with 33% of respondents playing them were trivia, word games and puzzles. Next came action/shooter games (18%), followed by gambling games, role-play and sports (10% each). These were followed by simulation (8%), driving (5%) and fitness or music games (3%).

The same survey showed that 25% of respondents played on their smartphones every day and 54% of the people who took part saw their mobile as their preferred gaming device. The report by the Entertainment Software Association also revealed that 44% of the people they surveyed played on their smartphones rather than any other platform.

It makes a lot of sense that many of us game on our mobiles more than any other platform. Above all it is the convenience that mobiles offer when deciding where and when to play. For instance, if you want to have a quick game of bingo while you are waiting for a TV programme to start, where you might not really be bothered enough to go and start up the desktop, it is far simpler to login to your favourite bingo site on a smartphone.

The ability to game on our mobiles means that people who might never have played bingo games in a real bingo hall or might never have travelled to a land-based casino to play a game of roulette or blackjack can now experiment with these types of games on their mobiles. They can play just once, for five minutes, if that is all they are interested in doing – or it may become a regular pastime.

The increase in use of mobiles for gaming is also part of the reason that older people are now being introduced to video gaming. The report by the Entertainment Software Association suggested that the number of women aged 50 or more who played games increased by 32% in the year 2012–2013. While few women over the age of 50 would make a first-time trip to a land-based casino, millions will be willing to try out those casino classics online.

Similarly, though the same age group might be more ready to go to a bingo hall, the convenience of playing online is clearly what draws so many people to sign up to online and mobile bingo sites. It is sure that mobiles have opened up gaming possibilities to people who would never have chosen to play on a console and if that is enough to classify people as gamers, then we truly are all gamers now.
