Two improbable heroes emerged from the first two legs of the 2011 Triple Crown. First, Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby – the 1 ¼ mile classic race with a purse of $2M – without having raced on dirt before.

The Leroidesanimaux colt had been a turf/synthetics horse in all his previous races and made history with his victory. Shackleford, a son of Forestry, finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby but led for much of the race.

Two weeks later, in the $1M 1 3/16 mile Preakness Stakes - the second and shortest leg of the Triple Crown - Shackleford prevailed, despite facing a slew of rivals who had fresh legs.

Using his superb tactical speed, Shackleford stalked the pace in second before making his bid for the lead – and then repelled two late charges, including one from Animal Kingdom, who had to settle for runner-up.

The stage is now set for an exciting rubber match in the 2011 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 11 at Belmont Park.
