Steve Davis is at betting odds of 25/1 to be the BBC Sports Personality of the Year with bookmaker Ladbrokes after his epic victory at the Crucible.

The Nugget defeated defending champion John Higgins who had been a record-breaking 1/25 to breeze through the clash when the match started.

Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams said: "We didn't give Davis a prayer. It was the most one-sided market we've ever offered and we've been left to pick up the pieces of a horrendous match result."

"Punters never gave up on The Nugget. They dared to believe in a miracle and were duly rewarded", Williams added.

1/25 is the shortest price the bookmaker had ever offered on a ranking event. Davis had been at betting odds of 9/1 to spring the upset.

Veteran Davis is at odds of 16/1 to go on and win the biggest prize in snooker and Ladbrokes reckon a title win for the 52-year old would cost British bookies in excess of £4 million.
