F1 Betting Preview - Punters Divided in Race to F1 Title

Punters are divided on what looks like being the most open race for the Formula One Championship title in many years.

Bookie Paddy Power reports that the top seven drivers have an almost equal share of the outright bets placed so far with the new regulations and early season testing suggesting Formula One could finally have more than a two car race on their hands.

The top six drivers in the betting each currently have a share of between 11% and 14% of the total bets placed so far.

Darren Haines, spokesman for the bookie, said: "Punters are completely divided on who they think is going to drive off with the title this year. If they’re right then instead of the usual procession Formula One could actually be interesting this year."

And it is currently the seemingly re-invigorated Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen who is the 15/4 favourite after a huge gamble on Jenson Button took the Brit to the front of the betting grid.

Button had been written off as an 80/1 outsider before rumours of some impressive performances from the newly monikered Brawn GP saw a huge gamble from punters that drove his price all the way down to as short as 4/1.

More punters have backed Button than any other driver (14%) and he would so far be the bookmaker's biggest payout of the campaign of more than £100,000.

Button is also the 7/2 favourite to win the first race of the season in Melbourne.

However punters are largely wise to the performance issues of reigning champion Lewis Hamilton's McLaren with the Ace of Herts out to 9/2 from 6/4 immediately after he lifted last year's title. The patriotic punt has not disappeared entirely but Hamilton bets are only about 11% of the market.
