Online betting firm Paddy Power has eased Argentina's odds on winning the 2010 World Cup from 5/1 to a best priced 6/1 following news of Diego Maradona's expected appointment as coach of the national team.

"It has been proved many times that you need tacticians more than motivators in international football and it remains to be seen whether Maradona possesses those qualities. Maradona was a player with few rivals and is rightly idolised in Argentina but very few of the greatest players have gone on to be great coaches - ultimately we think it would do more harm than good to what is a strong Argentinian team," a spokesperson of the bookie commented.

"With Maradona's limited coaching experience and turbulent personal life it would be akin to Gazza taking charge of the England team," he went on.

Confirmation from the Argentinian FA that they expect to ratify Maradona's appointment next Tuesday has the bookies doubting it will make the World Cup 2010 front-runners a stronger team.

The move makes Argentina's arch rivals Brazil clear favourites at 5/1 to claim a sixth World Cup with Fabio Capello's England at 7/1.
