The race to captain the British and Irish Lions on next year’s tour to South Africa has stepped up following the appointment of Wales’ grand slam coaching team for the tour.

And with Warren Gatland, Shaun Edwards and Rob Howley onboard Paddy Power has quickly installed Welsh skipper Ryan Jones the 13/8 favourite for the honour.

"The well deserved presence of Wales’ coaching staff to the Lions Tour has just edged the betting in favour of their skipper Ryan Jones but Brian O’Driscoll’s unfinished business from four years ago may not rule him out just yet," a Paddy Power spokesman commented.

Paddy Power rates the race for the captaincy to be almost a three horse race with Ireland’s Paul O’Connell and previous Lions captain Brian O’Driscoll close behind in the betting at 7/4 and 5/2 respectively.

Their closest contender following is England’s Steve Borthwick at 12/1 whilst rugby’s latest pin-up boy Danny Cipriani is the 50/1 outsider.
